What is this?

This little bird was only about 7 inches tall (that includes long skinny legs) and swam in the water even though it did not have webbed feet. I have never seen it before, and I dont know what it is.

    It looks like a "Wilson's Phalarope" Matt, a male. From what I have been told roles are reversed as to the brightest/most colourful are the females.
